When Does My Business Actually Need GST Registration?

Turnover thresholds are only part of the answer. Inter-state sales, e-commerce and certain services can make GST mandatory much sooner.

Small business owner packing orders

Many small business owners assume GST kicks in only after a fixed turnover. That's partly true — but several situations make registration mandatory regardless of how much you earn.

The turnover thresholds

Broadly, the threshold is ₹40 lakh for goods and ₹20 lakh for services (lower in special-category states). Cross it and you must register.

When turnover doesn't matter

  • You make inter-state taxable supplies of goods
  • You sell through e-commerce operators
  • You're liable under reverse charge
  • You're a casual or non-resident taxable person
Registering voluntarily can also help — it lets you claim input credit and sell to GST-registered buyers who need your invoice.

The right answer depends on what you sell, where, and to whom. We assess applicability precisely so you neither register unnecessarily nor miss a mandatory trigger.
